PRESS REVIEWS

A grim little story with respectable special effects, given the medium, and does no disservice to, well, anything we know and love about Star Wars. It’s a good, humbly done micro movie. I like it. Good work, everyone!

It features some impressive costume work and a subzero snow-covered environment captured from an icefield in Alberta, Canada. The short also has great visual effects that don't rely on CGI, including a stop-motion AT-AT walker that looks like it belongs right in the Empire Strikes Back.

Before it became a galaxy conquering titan, Star Wars was a shoestring operation... The work clearly paid off, despite being a comparatively small operation. It's like Yoda said: size matters not.

This Star Wars fan film was hell to make but it was SO worth it... The film really looks like it could have been in the original trilogy.

While the release of “Rogue One,” is still far-off in the future, “Rebel Scum” may be the treat that every “Star Wars” fan deserves.

What sets Rebel Scum apart from other Star Wars fan films, and in fact other independent productions in general, is that all the effects were done using old school, traditional methods. No computer animation, no particle effects – just models, miniatures, and matte painting. Oh, and the backgrounds aren’t fake. They’re the real deal. Rebel Scum is an amazing accomplishment. It’s clear to us that the Force is with the Nguyen brothers and Blood Brother Cinema. Well done, lads. Well done indeed.

Remember the opening text of "A New Hope"? The fan film "Rebel Scum", above that line will count as extra history of the Resistance.

LE CINEPHILE ANONYME.png

Ambitious in its simplicity and served by a noble staging (very close to that of George Lucas), Rebel Scum proved captivating from beginning to end, but also reflects the definition of fan-film offering a real alternative to the world Star Wars, while retaining the essence.

REBEL SCUM Fan Film brings the emotions... The director was able to make me feel the fear and emptiness in the stranded Rebel pilot as he looked around at the desolate and frozen mountains.

The short film is remarkable in its adherence to the 1980 epic, evident in everything from its sweeping ice-bound environment (filmed over two months in minus 30°C in Alberta's Athabasca Glacier), the props, stop motion, color grading and even the scene transitions.
